Send In The Clowns...Maybe

By Friday afternoon I have trouble focusing on my work and sometimes goof off a little, so I thought it would be a good time to display some of the clowning around that goes on the thrift store shelves as well (sorry for the bad pun, couldn't help myself. I blame the clowns).

I know some people who are terrified of clowns, and others who have an affinity for them - as their sole purpose is to make us laugh . I am somewhere in the middle. While I don't think of all clowns as Pennywise, neither do I seek them out for decor in my home.

But some people did...and then they ended up on the thrift store shelves.

I wondered what was in this box and opened it to find this guy staring blankly back at me.
I'll admit I may have been a bit startled.

I don't think this poor clown has ever been out of his plastic tube.
But he has a nice umbrella and pocket watch.

I'm just going to call this guy Wonky-Eyed Joe.

Um, sir.
You may want to borrow the umbrella from the guy in the plastic tube. I don't think he needs it (being in his plastic tube and all) and yours is not going to help you much in the rain.

You don't often see a clown couple.
Their kids are probably super funny with really big feet and red noses.

At first I thought this clown looked a little creepy,

but he seems to be cracking this baby up, so he can't be all bad.

This clown is just awesome because he's riding a unicorn...and that's just awesome.

Luckily, I did not see this guy on the thrift store shelves...just in my nightmares.

Happy weekend! Hope you get some time too goof off!

  1. The clown couple - I think the female clown look preggers. Oh wait - the male clown does too!?

Real or Reproduction

As you are hunting around for treasure at yard sales and flea markets, you will come across things that make you wonder if they are original or reproductions. It can be hard to tell.

These are a couple tip offs.

One, does it look a little worn? It should if its really antique or vintage. Even the best kept china got moved around in the cabinet, the doll's vinyl body and hair faded a bit, or the lunch box got a little rust around the hinges. If it looks shiny and new, chances are it is.

Two, are there a lot of them? If you are in a shop or flea market stall and there are ten of the items you've been looking for and haven't been able to find...they have probably been manufactured. Unless you are at a reputable dealer who specializes in that item, then you may have hit the jackpot for your particular collectible.

A good way to gauge if it is a reputable dealer is they will be happy to answer your questions about if the item is authentic or not, and how you can tell. A dealer with a passion and knowledge about that item, will enjoy explaining that all to you. A disreputable dealer, not so much.
