Something old, something new, something borrowed...but nothing blue

As I decorated the house for Christmas, the old wedding day adage came to mind about something old, something new, something borrowed...you know how it goes. There's a mix of all these things decking my halls.

The "new" in our holiday décor is a tinsel-colored tree in the living room.

And pink in the foyer.

Our "something old" and "something borrowed" are repurposed thrift store finds paired with some things hanging around the house.

Like this little red train case and retro Santa I found at my favorite thrift store,

combined with some greens I "borrowed" from the garden and flameless candles,

to make this cute little tableau.

An antique bowl I recently foraged out of the basement of my husband's grandparent's house, became a Christmasy centerpiece.

What were old, scratched up ornaments that were headed for the trash, and a candle that still had a little life left in it,

became a festive way to light our holiday table.

While I did not repurpose, or buy, anything blue...the holiday blues can still creep up on us.
So most importantly, be kind to yourself this season (and always, really).

Don't run yourself off your feet...or legs.

Maybe dress festively to cheer yourself up (if your outfit has both legs, all the better),

and tell those clowns to get off your back.

If the holiday prep has you feeling like your drowning,

give yourself a hand for making it through 2021,

and take a moment to listen to some carols...and breathe (with a furry friend if possible).

I wish you peace in this sometimes crazy, over-scheduled - occasionally emotionally triggering - joyous mess that is December.

Happiest of Holiday Seasons

Tips from our favorite shop keeper

Real or Reproduction

As you are hunting around for treasure at yard sales and flea markets, you will come across things that make you wonder if they are original or reproductions. It can be hard to tell.

These are a couple tip offs.

One, does it look a little worn? It should if its really antique or vintage. Even the best kept china got moved around in the cabinet, the doll's vinyl body and hair faded a bit, or the lunch box got a little rust around the hinges. If it looks shiny and new, chances are it is.

Two, are there a lot of them? If you are in a shop or flea market stall and there are ten of the items you've been looking for and haven't been able to find...they have probably been manufactured. Unless you are at a reputable dealer who specializes in that item, then you may have hit the jackpot for your particular collectible.

A good way to gauge if it is a reputable dealer is they will be happy to answer your questions about if the item is authentic or not, and how you can tell. A dealer with a passion and knowledge about that item, will enjoy explaining that all to you. A disreputable dealer, not so much.
